1st XV 21-3 Percy Park PDF Print E-mail

It was a welcome return to rugby at Mitford Road when the weather finally allowed play on an excellant surface. It was an exceptionally important game for Morpeth as recent results and lack of matches has seen them drop dangerously into the relegation zone ,having said that a glance at the league shows so many teams seperated by just a few points.

There was a debutant for Morpeth when Liam Carmichael took to the field at tight head prop ,and he was involved straight away when he took the ball from the kick off. It was Park however who dominated the early play and deservedly took the lead when full back Rutter slotted home a close range penalty to make it 3-0.

A Sutherland break gave Jinks a chance from a penalty but he pushed it wide. Morpeth were slightly fortunate at this stage when Park missed 2 penalties and continued to dominate possession. Yet Morpeth hit back with an excellant try after a Jinks break and good forward pressure led to Lynn crashing over ,Jinks missed the conversion. 5-3 to the home side at halftime.

The second half saw a superb Morpeth performance where they completely dominated their oppostion ,early pressure failed to give a score as Jinks hit a post with a penalty. Nevertheless the break had to come and from a Jinks penalty then a driving maul from a lineout with a Matty Dawson try saw them take a 13-3 lead.

There was now only one team in it as Morpeth's total domination was rewarded with a further Jinks penalty whilst Lynn grabbed a brace going over after kicking through in the last minutes ,that score was missed by Jinks.

This was vitally important win for Morpeth both in terms of points won but also for confidence as they seek to climb the league in the second half of the season.

Final score 21-3.
